As you may have already heard, some people brush their teeth with baking soda as an alternative to toothpaste. Some toothpaste manufacturers even include baking soda as an ingredient in their paste. So is baking soda good or bad? Well, it’s all up to you. To help you decide, our dentist, Dr. Gary Wegmann, is happy to list the pros and cons of brushing with baking soda.
-Baking soda has been proven to effectively clean the teeth. Some studies have shown that products with baking soda are more effective in cleaning the smile than products that do not have baking soda.
-Baking soda is cheap. One box is less than $1 and it can clean your smile for a long time!
-Brushing with baking soda is quite messy.
-Baking soda leaves a gritty and soda feeling and taste in your mouth.
-The American Dental Association has not approved brushing the teeth with baking soda. The ADA is an organization that approves products that are safe and effective in an oral hygiene routine.
-Brushing with baking soda alone will not expose your teeth to the fluoride they need. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens and nourishes the tooth enamel, helping it fight cavities and enamel erosion.
