You Can Often Replace an Extracted Tooth by Having a Dental Implant Installed

Losing a tooth to damage, decay or extraction is often a serious cause for concern. Even if you learn to live with the impaired ability to chew food, the missing tooth will inevitably lead to future complications. Teeth relate to each other by their shared structure and presence. When a tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth often start to migrate and twist toward the void. This can result in chips, fractures and alignment issues with the other teeth in your bite.

One of the best methods for replacing an extracted tooth is to have a dental implant installed.

Dr. Gary Wegmann will first examine your jaw to make sure you have enough bone material to secure a dental implant. If there isn’t enough bone, you might need to receive a bone graft to restore the missing structure.

Dr. Gary Wegmann will then refer you to an oral surgeon who will install the implant. The oral surgeon will make a careful incision in your gums. A narrow channel will then be made into the bone. A titanium implant will then be screwed into the channel and your gums will be sutured closed.

Titanium is known for being biologically safe and it will actually fuse with your natural bone in a process known as osseointegration.

Once your gums have healed and the titanium implant has been fully integrated into the surrounding bone, your dentist will take an impression. This impression will be sent to the dental lab where a permanent crown will be fashioned from porcelain, gold or base metal alloys.

If you have had a tooth extracted, you should call The Chicago Family Dental Center at 312.551.0500 to see if a dental implant in Chicago, Illinois, is right for you.
