My Gums Are Inflamed. What Do I Do?

Inflamed and swollen gums can cause serious discomfort. If your gums are in this condition, you’re probably searching for the best ways to relieve the pain and find the comfort you deserve. To help you, our dentist, Dr. Gary Wegmann, has some tips for you. Now, because a serious dental issue (gum disease) could be causing your inflamed gums, it’s best to start by making an appointment at our office. That way we can make sure everything is OK. Until your visit, you can use these tips:

-First, brush your teeth twice a day (for two minutes each time) with a soft-bristled toothbrush. As you brush, be gentle along the gumline. Being rough while brushing can cause your swollen gums, so try to reduce your brushing pressure.

-Second, floss your smile once a day with a flossing product that is easy to use. This will help you avoid forcing the floss into place, which can help you avoid injuring your gums. Flossing helps you remove the bacteria, food particles, and other harmful substances that are stuck between your teeth bothering your gums.

-Third, rinse your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash. You should do this daily because it can complete the cleaning job and kill the bacteria in your mouth that are bothering your oral tissues.
